Part 3: The Wife — The Strong and Steady Helper
From the series: “Design & Duty: Rediscovering the Biblical Family”
Scripture Focus:
“Then the Lord God said, ‘It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.’”
— Genesis 2:18
When God called woman a “helper,” He wasn’t saying, “Here’s someone to fetch Adam’s sandals.” The Hebrew word used in Genesis is ezer—and it’s the same word used to describe God as our helper throughout Scripture (Psalm 33:20, Psalm 70:5).
That means the role of helper is strong, vital, and absolutely essential. It’s less about doing the dishes and more about holding the line.
What Does a Helper Do?
Supports the Mission – She comes alongside her husband’s calling.
Strengthens the Home – Like the rib, she protects what’s most vital.
Speaks with Wisdom – Proverbs 31 says her words carry kindness and direction.
Builds Up, Not Tears Down – Proverbs 14:1 reminds us that a wise woman builds her house.
So no, “helper” doesn’t mean passive. It means powerful in the right place.
A Little Reality Check:
Sometimes being the helper means not jumping in to fix everything. (Ouch, right?)
It might mean:
Letting your husband figure out the IKEA instructions (even if you can do it faster).
Praying before you correcting.
Choosing encouragement over eye rolls.
Heart Check:
Do I see my role as less important—or do I value it as God does?
Am I supporting my husband’s leadership, or secretly competing with it?
Where could my words bring more life into our home?
A Prayer for the Helper’s Heart:
Lord, thank You for calling me to be a helper. Teach me to carry this role with joy, not resentment. Help my words to build, not break. Give me strength to support, courage to step in where needed, and wisdom to know when to be still. May my life reflect the steady, strong helper You’ve designed me to be. Amen.
